Function:
To perform duties in the Dee and Sue Boswell and Alice Hudders Art Galleries. Employee is expected to be self-directed and to work independently, using judgment and discretion. Employee will be expected to promote and foster a teamwork environment. Employee also must be committed to the community college philosophy, a student-centered philosophy, and the consensus decision making process.
Organizational Relationship:
The Art Gallery Technician/Attendant reports to Assistant Professor of Art who then reports to the Dean of Arts and Sciences, who reports to the Provost, Vice President of Instructional Services, who reports to the President.
Qualifications for the Position
Required:
- Five years experience in exhibiting in individual or group art shows. (must provide list of exhibitions and dates) or
- Associates Degree with a least 24 hours in Visual Arts credit.
Preferred:
- Previous gallery/museum experience
- Previous customer service experience desired.
Essential Functions:
Technician Roles
- Assists, full-time College Program Coordinator of Art in connecting with artists
- Light to Medium computer use to obtain emails, schedules for work, printing labels/ posters and managing social media posts about the gallery and workshops.
- Install art exhibitions or aid artists or artists group with installation of artwork.
- Supervise current exhibitions and the permanent collection, maintain hanger hardware for artwork
- Maintain, catalog and preserve permanent collection of the college at Main Campus and all educational centers
- Develop an art exhibition and workshop schedule for both galleries to include a minimum of three exhibits in the fall and spring terms and one exhibit during the summer term. This would total seven unique exhibits a year at each gallery and a total of fourteen for the college.
- Maintain a current mailing list of patrons and artist for gallery shows.
Attendant Roles:
- Protects works of art from theft, vandalism, and accidental damage.
- Interacts with visitors to give directions, information, and provide general assistance.
- Serve as a liaison for the college with district art guilds/communities.
- Assures visitor compliance with appropriate gallery expectations.
- Answers general questions from gallery visitors.
- Should have good verbal communication skills in order to speak to visitors and be understood
- Must be tactful and polite in dealing with the public.
- Must be presentable at all times through proper grooming and personal hygiene.
- Must be observant in order to detect and report unusual behavior or circumstances.
- Must be alert and able to respond quickly in an emergency.
Other Functions:
Assists with other gallery activities as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Supervise student workers as necessary.
Supervisory Controls:
The Art Gallery Attendant/Technician is expected to work independently with a minimum amount of supervision. Consultation, as necessary, is available with the Assistant Professor of Art and Academic Dean.
Guidelines:
The Art Gallery Technician/Attendant is expected to follow all college policies and procedures as well as all local, state, and federal laws. This person is also expected to adhere to and foster development of Kaskaskia College core values of learning, respect, excellence, access, diversity, integrity, and community.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Duties will be performed in an academic environment consistent with the program of study and the needs of the student. Environment may be prone to frequent distractions and interruptions. Travel within the college district is required as necessary to perform the duties of the position.
